This term J1 have been learning all about ‘People Who Help Us.’ We have explored the roles of doctors, nurses, hairdressers, fire-fighters, postal workers and police officers. Through play-based learning, environmental outings and special visitors to class, we have enjoyed learning all about different jobs in the community.
At Christmas we went to the post office to post our letters to Santa. We all queued in line to buy our stamps at the post office. We put our stamps on our letters and then the man at the post office put them in the mail bag to be sent to Santa. Sparkles the class elf came to the post office too and helped collect a parcel. We had our own post office in class and J1 were very good at sorting the letters and exploring the weights of different parcels. They also made their own cards to post in the class post box.
Doctors and Nurses
J1 enjoyed dressing up as doctors and nurses in class.
Some lovely nurses came to visit J1 and told us all about their job on the children’s ward at Mid-Ulster hospital. They brought lots of medical equipment for the children to explore and special hats to wear. Harry the bear came too and the children enjoyed checking Harry over. They used a thermometer to take Harry’s temperature and a special light to look into Harry’s mouth and ears. We all enjoyed the nurse’s visit to J1.
We also had a visit from the PSNI who told us all about the role of police officers in the community. The children all enjoyed trying on the police officer’s yellow jacket and hat. They also got to explore some of the equipment used by police officers.
