Kilronan School offers students opportunities and experiences which will assist them in making the transition from school to adulthood.

Giving pupils opportunities to complete work experience seeks to build upon what has been taught over earlier years through participation in a broad range of work experience activities from class based right through to community based placements. Work experience placements are decided upon by taking into account the students’ needs, abilities, interests and aspirations as well as post-school opportunities available in the local area.

Our class based work experience opportunities consists of washing and drying the dishes after break time, answering the class telephone, taking the class dinner order to the Kitchen Staff and making sure the dinner basket is brought up to the canteen each day.

Our school based placements offers our young people opportunities to assist the building supervisor, kitchen and office staff.

S7 have been developing their employability skills and are opening their very own Vinted pop u shop called ‘K-Mark’.  They have been sorting through a variety of second hand clothes and preparing them to re-sell again.  They have been learning how to look a clothing labels for sizes, wash, iron and fold clothes in preparation for opening.

Our School Leavers participate in community based work placements to further develop their employability skills and to give them the opportunity to apply skills developed through class and school based placements functionally, in a real life working environment.

Cafe Revive is a small coffee shop ran by our School Leavers every Thursday morning at First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church Hall from 10:30am-11:30am. Our pupils are involved in setting up tables, preparing butter and jam, ensuirng all sugar bowls and milk jugs are fully stocked and ready for opening.  They develop their communication skills by taking orders and learning how to retain the information given by the customer to be able to complete the order.

Our School Leavers also complete a work exerience placement at Alternative Angles where they make a variety of products to sell within their local community.  The have assembled parts together in order to make a variety of candels and reed diffusers.

On a Friday, some of our young people from the School Leavers class attend the NRC in Magerafelt to experience the world of work in a salon environment.  They have looked at a variety of products and how they should be stored and have developed their knowledge in Healthy and Safety procedures at work.
