Exploring Contemporary Issues

18th Feb 2026

We began by listening to the story of Rosa Parks. From there, we moved on to Martin Luther King Jr., learning about his life, the changes he fought for, and listening to his powerful “I Have a Dream” speech.

During our RE lessons, we have been exploring the themes of segregation and fairness, and these stories helped us understand why equality matters. To deepen this learning, we carried out a practical activity to help pupils experience what unfair treatment might feel like.

The class were divided into two groups: one group wore blue bibs and the other did not. The pupils in blue bibs had to enter the classroom through a different door, sit in a separate area, drink from a different jug, and they were not allowed to use the microphone, which represented not having a voice. Afterwards, we reflected on the activity and linked it back to how people were treated in the past. This led to a thoughtful discussion about why fairness, equality, and standing up for what is right are so important.
