Kilronan School offers students opportunities and experiences which will assist them in making the transition from school to adulthood.

Giving pupils opportunities to complete work experience seeks to build upon what has been taught over earlier years through participation in a broad range of work experience activities from class based right through to community based placements. Work experience placements are decided upon by taking into account the students’ needs, abilities, interests and aspirations as well as post-school opportunities available in the local area.

Our class based work experience opportunities consists of washing and drying the dishes after break time, answering the class telephone, taking the class dinner order to the Kitchen Staff and making sure the dinner basket is brought up to the canteen each day.

Our school based placements offers our young people opportunities to assist the building supervisor, kitchen and office staff.

Prior to Covid 19, groups of our School Leaver students would have completed their community based work experience placements at Cafe Revive, Mums & Tots, Magherafelt Food Bank and JC Stewart’s.

Cafe Revive was open every Thursday morning during term time at First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church Hall from 10:30am-11:30am. Our pupils are currently not able to help out with this as we are trying to reduce risk and prevent the spread of Covid 19. Instead our School Leavers class prepare treats such as shortbread, scones and traybakes each week, invite one class form the school community to join them each Thursday morning in a socially distanced manner in our beautiful, newly refurbished Sperrin Room. The pupils are gaining valuable skills in making invitations, preparing food, setting tables, taking orders, serving their guests and tiding up afterwards.

Thank you to our local employers who have assisted our young people during community based placements and we look forward to establishing these partnerships again in the future.
