The children in J5 are really enjoying our new topic Fairy Tales, Knights and Castles. We have some pupils learning at home and love seeing their contributions sent in via See Saw.
We used the story Zog by Julia Donaldson as our focus for the first two weeks. The children really enjoyed this story and we loved identifying the rhyming words and taking part in a sensory story where we breathed fire through special tubes we made in art, tasted some peppermints as Zog did when he got hoarse, put sticky plasters on our heads and bandaged our elbows just like Princess Pearl did with Zog when he bumped into a tree and when his wing tip caught alight. We even get Golden star awards at the end of the day if we try really hard just like the one Madam Dragon gave Zog. We loved painting dragons for our wall display and making models of dragons during art.
We looked at PowerPoints of castles and compared how they differ from our homes today. It has been interesting looking at lots of different castles in Northern Ireland and learning to label parts of a castle.
During Numeracy we have been learning how to use a ruler to measure things. We measured objects around the room and the toy castle in our small world play. We were all fantastic at measuring a drawing of a castle and recording our answers. We made some fantastic shape castles and copied instructions to build castles in our game Castle Logix.
Another story we have been enjoying is Rapunzel. We have measured drawings of Rapunzel’s hair and made playdough hair for Rapunzel. It was fun to see who could make the longest plait! We have our very own Rapunzel in class and used a tape measure to measure her lovely hair. It was 49cm long! We also used the tape measure to record how tall we are.
During PE we enjoyed acting out one of our favourite songs “There was a princess long ago” and taking parts in games such as ‘steal the treasure’ and ‘cannonballed’. We used our crowns, shields and hobby horses to pretend we were marching like the soldiers in The Grand Old Duke of York and to pretend we were the handsome prince coming to rescue a princess. The next few weeks of this topic will be lots more fun too!!
