S3 Pupils Celebrate World Book Day - 2020

18th Apr 2020

World Book Day aims to celebrate books and reading, particularly for younger members of our society.

S3 pupils got World Book Day off to a great start as each pupil dressed up as a favourite character from a book. Mums and dads did a great job as each child excitedly came into school, showing off their brilliant costume to everyone, and particularly at the parade in the school hall!

In class we participated in Shared Reading when we looked at a Big Book titled; “Grace and Family” by Mary Hoffman. This is an engaging picture book that deals sensitively with the important experiences of family, difference, separation, and reunion. We used sensory items to help immerse the pupils more fully in the story. We also focused on concepts about print, vocabulary, and comprehension. Sharing a book with our pupils helps to build up their concentration and understanding of the story and gives them a greater love of stories and books.

We also had lots of other fun activities following on from World Book Day, such as making bookmarkers in Art, participating in drama activities and visiting the Local Library, where we participated in a Library Detective Book Hunt. We had to try to find books on particular topics, for example, a book about an animal or sport, or a comic book or a book with one word for its title, etc. We had clipboards and the staff helped us to fill in the clues when we found a book.

We had good fun finding these books, though it did become a bit competitive at times!
