Kilronan School, Magherafelt

Student Council Training day

25th Sep 2019

Through the Magherafelt Learning Partnership, some school council members were invited to join with student council members from St Pius X College, Magherafelt High School, St. Mary's College and  Sperrin Integrated.

Pupils participated in a number of workshops to help develop negotiation and communication skills. We heard from Sean Henry, from Magherafelt Council, worked in teams to discuss his role as a good relations officer and to ask questions.

Marty and Terry from the Youth Service also led the negotiating workshop where we all addressed scenarios that affect young people today.

Our pupils enjoyed a shared break of hotdogs and beans with the other pupils and sharing a coach to and from the venue. We also had a lucky dip and got prizes at the end of the day.

Pupils were able to give feedback, and our pupils spoke well, saying they would like more of the "games" at the beginning to help them get to know others before having to speak out in a group. Our pupils were also able to share with others about our Rights Respecting Schools journey and how it is important to promote children's rights.
