Wild Animals in the Jungle

19th Apr 2026

J1 loved exploring their topic “Wild Animals in the Jungle” during Term 2. Each week they explored a new animal through their daily Play Based Learning and they developed their listening skills as they listened for the different Jungle and animal sounds.
They started off investigating Tigers and used the popular story “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” to base their activities. Next came another well known story- “Elmer the Colourful Elephant”. J1 practised their colour recognition and sorting skills with coloured chickpeas and explored the Elephants trunk through funnels in the water tray. When learning about Monkeys they were excited to focus on their favourite song “5 Little Monkeys.” They built a bed for the monkeys in their large scale construction and counted the monkeys into sets in their chia seed slime.
To finish the topic, J1 developed their awareness of measure with the Giraffe, measuring the long neck of each Giraffe in the sand using cubes. They developed their fine motor skills by separating the Giraffes spots in the rice using their fingers, tongs and tweezers.
J1’s favourite part of their topic was their Jungle Dramatic Play Area. They loved the soft animals, the pretend trees and reading the Jungle themed books.
