Polar Explorers❄️☃️

8th Feb 2021

Take a look at some of our pictures based around our topic Polar Explorers☃️❄️

This term we have been learning about the North and South Pole. To begin our topic we read the book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. This book was about a little penguin who was lost and needed help to get back to the North Pole. During play based learning we painted some penguins, we looked at their colour, what they sounded like and what they ate. One of our pupils really enjoyed watching Blue Planet at home, especially the episode about penguins.

Following on from the book Lost and Found, we participated and listened to our sensory story ‘We’re Going On A Polar Bear Hunt’. The children were able to touch the cold ice, put their hands in the deep cold water, listen to the swirling, whirling snow storm and find the Polar bear in the deep dark igloo.

Through Play-based learning we explored the different animals that live in the North and South Pole. Using My Board the children were able to differentiate and sort two Arctic animals, the Polar bears and the Penguins. During our topic we looked at the weather in the North and South Pole. We added some shredded paper in a tray and used spades to fill buckets. We also added some of the shredded paper to our igloo, which we loved!!! We were very lucky to have a snow day in school, this gave us first hand experiences of what it might feel and look like in the Arctic.

We added a large igloo to our role play corner with hats, scarves, gloves and sensory lights. We have been learning to become more independent in J2 by being able to put these items of clothing ourselves. As our igloo was the focus of our play we added white Blocks to our construction area. The children were encouraged to look at the visual as stimulus to help them design their igloo. During construction play we were able to explore positional language by putting the Eskimo under, in, on top, behind and beside our igloo. As a class we watched a video and PowerPoint about Eskimo’s which focused on what they wear to keep warm and how they travel in the snow.

To finish our topic we made some bird feeders to put outside in our sensory garden.

We have a few pupils working from home and as a class we have loved looking at their great topic work which is sent each week via Seesaw, Well done!!

We hope you enjoy looking at our lovely pictures and all the learning that has taken place this term.
